Roan Mountain Wedding | Matt + Caitlin

Caitlin and Matt found me through Instagram when they were searching for a photographer for their Roan Mountain wedding. The couple lives in South Carolina, but they planned to get married near family on Roan Mountain in the Cherokee National Forest. They’d been searching for a local photographer but weren’t having much luck. So they expanded their search to all of Tennessee through the hashtag Tennessee wedding photographer and found OkCrowe Weddings!

Matt and Caitlin met when she was bartending during college at USC in Columbia, South Carolina. Matt’s a musician, and he would come to the bar and tell her about the shows he was doing. Later she’d gush to her friends about “hot Matt.” When she stayed in town over spring break to get in some extra work hours, Matt asked her out! From that first date, they’ve been pretty inseparable.

Caitlin says their common sense of adventure, love of exploring, and creative natures (she’s an artist and graphic designer) are just as important to their relationship as the things that make them different.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

Because she and Matt are both artists (musician and graphic designer), they wanted their wedding to reflect their chosen paths, their relationship, and their authentic selves. Caitlin’s creative touch was involved from start to finish in every detail of the day. You’ll notice her flair for bright, bold, and whimsical details in this gallery. She designed their invitation suite (HOLY WOW) and the plastic cups for their reception (Laissez les bons temps rouler is a Cajun French phrase meaning “Let the good times roll”). She hand painted hangers for her bridesmaids’ dresses and all the signage for the ceremony and reception. Caitlin also ordered all the florals online from Bloominous and designed each piece herself! I’m pretty sure there’s not much this lady can’t do--and I love how incredibly her details came together to reflect a unique sense for their wedding day and relationship.

NATIONAL FOREST WEDDING HIDEAWAY

Matt and Caitlin got married at The Barn at Triple J Farms, which is just outside of Roan Mountain State Park near the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Deep in the heart of the Cherokee National Forest, it felt like a little hideaway from the rest of the world. I do so love state park and national park weddings for this reason.

ROAN MOUNTAIN WEDDING CEREMONY

Here’s how you know the world is small. I get hired to shoot a wedding 3 ½ hours away from home in the middle of a huge national forest. In talking to their friend Mel who officiated the ceremony, I realized how many friends we have in common back in Chattanooga. What a wild connection.

So Matt and Caitlin chose not to do a first look ahead of their ceremony. Y’all, Matt’s face when he saw her walk down the aisle--I just can’t. This is the sweetest moment. I love when his dad (also his best man!) leans over and squeezes him around the shoulder. So much tenderness, and these moments get me every time!

Caitlin and Matt have two really sweet dogs that they included throughout their day. I could not get over how their lab stood next to Mel watching his mom and dad exchange vows.

ROAN MOUNTAIN WEDDING RECEPTION AND SUNSET BRIDE AND GROOM PHOTOS

Matt and Caitlin’s reception was a ton of fun. Their goal was to kick back and celebrate with their family and friends, and they accomplished that to the final moments. Matt’s band played, and he would take breaks between dancing to go play with them.

Partway through the reception, I grabbed the couple so we could go out to the field for sunset portraits. You guys know these are one of my favorite things to shoot, and I love when my couples make time for them! Later, Matt and Caitlin told me they really enjoyed this session because the stress of the day was totally gone by that point. They were able to feel really relaxed and enjoy being themselves in front of the camera! These two highly recommend doing sunset portraits.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS <3

I send out a questionnaire about a month before each wedding I shoot. One question I ask is for advice the couple would give to future couples planning their dream wedding. Caitlin’s answer really resonated with me. And I’ve got to say--Caitlin and Matt really took their own advice to heart and had an incredible day because of it!

“Figure out what's actually important to you and don't stress about the things that aren't really that big of a deal. Also go with your gut, listen to people's suggestions but don't let people force you to do things you don't want to do. In the end all that matters is you're together (and food, no one wants hangry guests haha!).”

Caitlin and Matt, thank you so much for trusting me with your wedding day! Congratulations, and let the good times roll!

Intimate Autumn Wedding at Fall Creek Falls, Tennessee | Bridget + Alex

Bridget and Alex. Oh my gosh! Where to even start. These two planned an intimate autumn wedding at Fall Creek Falls in the hills of eastern Tennessee. I love all the details they incorporated, and I’m excited to show you this wedding.

FALL CREEK FALLS STATE PARK AUTUMN WEDDING

Alex and Bridget share a common passion for biking and adventure, and they incorporated these passions into their wedding at Fall Creek Falls. They decorated the stone pillars at the Fall Creek Falls overlook with bike wheels (covered in greens and flowers!). During their ceremony, instead of a traditional candle-lighting or sand-pouring, the couple created a meaningful piece of art. They used a painted red bike chain to shape a heart! I love this completely individual and unique move. After their first kiss as husband and wife, Bridget and Alex shot colorful confetti out of confetti cannons!

BRIDE AND GROOM WEDDING PORTRAITS IN
COLORFUL FALL CREEK FALLS

In case you haven’t been, Fall Creek Falls State Park is already a place I really love. The park is about 2 hours away from Chattanooga, and it’s an amazing getaway for an awesome hike or waterfall adventure, or for a weekend camping trip. You’ve GOT to go explore the park for yourself!

Hoooly moley. These colors, this couple...just wow! I was so pumped to do Alex and Bridget’s bride and groom portraits in the park because the scenery is astounding. Especially in the fall, the ridgelines are highlighted with so many bright colors, and I knew the photos would pop.

First of all, I loved how Alex helped put on Bridget’s sneakers so she’d be able to navigate the large rocks of the terrain here. How sweet is that? But between the three of us (and an extra hand or two), we were able to get some great shots of them on one of the awesome suspension bridges and next to a raging waterfall, too!

BIKING WITH BOO

After we finished their portraits, we headed out of the park to meet up with their guests at a gorgeous cabin. I love that Bridget and Alex entered their reception with sparklers!! Everyone was so happy for them!

The couple put together a delicious buffet dinner, and the dance floor was pretty much the coolest. They strung white porch lights over a beautiful mountain stone patio. Even though it was super dark by this point, all the lights really created a cozy effect.

Bridget and Alex brought their biking passion into so many details of the reception. Between the wedding favors and the tumblers with custom koozies...and their cakes. Y’all, they topped both the wedding cake and groom’s cake with custom biker silhouettes! And I loved how they brought in their adventurous spirits to the gift table and guestbook, too. Their guestbook created a sort of scrapbook for them with photos and messages from their family and friends. What a cool way to preserve this day.

Bridget and Alex, I hope you find many more adventures together! Thank you for letting me be part of such a beautiful wedding and celebration of your love.

I love getting to see all the gorgeous preserved lands around our country! Southeast Tennessee has some of the best state parks for weddings, and I’m a huge fan. I’ve been able to travel to photograph a couples’ session in Joshua Tree National Park and a Zion National Park winter elopement now, as well. More coming in the future--can’t wait to share!

If you’ve got a state or national park on your bucket list, most likely it’s on mine, too! I’d love to be your Chattanooga wedding photographer...and beyond. Whether you’re tying the knot in town or heading to one of our planet’s glorious protected lands for a destination wedding or elopement, I’d be thrilled to document it all for you. Bohemian Festival Wedding | Margaret + Garrison

Margaret and Garrison’s bohemian festival wedding is one of the most interesting weddings I’ve had the honor to photograph. I’m so excited to show it to you!

This couple are eclectic masterminds: Margaret is the creator and entrepreneur behind Bohemian Seed, modernizing and upcycling vintage clothing, and Garrison is a concert promoter. While planning their wedding, they knew they wanted their wedding to be a combination of their favorite things – nature, vintage decor, vegetarian food, good music, and community.

This wedding has been featured on:
Festival Brides  // Sisters in Law  // Boho Weddings  // Hometown Bride Guide

From music festival to bohemian wedding festival

Margaret shared with me how they met. “We actually lived in the same city for four years and had so many mutual friends--it’s a wonder we didn’t meet sooner. We met briefly at a show that Garrison was promoting, but we didn’t get to know each other until months later when we were both at a music festival in Nashville. My favorite band at the time, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, was performing on stage. At one point, the lead singer jumped into the crowd and was passing the mic to members of the audience to join in on singing along. I ran as close to the front as I could, and somehow he handed me the microphone. The cameras panned to me, and Garrison recognized me from the big screen. We met up after the show and have been inseparable ever since.”

Bride and groom waterfall portraits at Foster Falls near Chattanooga, Tennessee

We started off Margaret and Garrison’s wedding day by hiking to Foster Falls for their bride and groom portrait session. They got ready along the path, helping each other into their unique, bohemian bazaar-themed wedding garb.

Margaret wore an antique Afghan wedding dress that she modernized into the bohemian wedding dress of her dreams. Garrison wore his favorite pair of pants, a vintage Russian wedding shirt, and a scarf that Margaret made from the remnants of her dress alterations. They were both barefoot as well, though Margaret adorned gold gypsy anklets with jingle bells for pizzaz! Truly one-of-a-kind duds for their one-of-a-kind wedding.

These forest and waterfall photos are swoon-worthy. I loved capturing such tenderness between Margaret and Garrison.

Bohemian festival wedding at Hemlock Falls

After their portraits at Foster Falls, we headed back to Hemlock Falls for their boho-bazaar wedding ceremony.

To keep everything entirely DIY, Margaret and Garrison pulled together borrowed pieces from friends and family, pieces they had collected specifically for the event, and even incorporated pieces from their own home into the ceremony and reception. One of their close friends officiated with a script written especially for them. They didn’t even purchase florals for decor! Margaret used Japanese lanterns growing behind her family friend’s house, bowls of fruit, and flowers foraged along the path to Foster Falls.

I personally love how they used these rugs to line the aisle and create a dance floor! Such a cool idea.

When it comes to planning such a big event, Margaret offers this advice to other couples: “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Don’t overthink it. Be present, and enjoy each moment because what they say is true: months and months of planning goes by in just a few hours. It all happens SO fast. Take a deep breath and just enjoy each other.”

Later, when asked about their favorite moment of the day, Margaret said, “I can’t choose just one special moment! The whole day felt like a dream turned reality. Everything from walking down the aisle, hearing Taylor’s script that he wrote so specifically for us, exchanging vows, the food, the first dance, watching the sunset. It was all so purely and truly magical.” It sounds like their bohemian festival wedding dreams came true.
