5 Unique Unity Ceremony Ideas

Looking for a way to give your wedding ceremony a personal touch? Try one of these unique unity ceremony ideas!

Traditionally, this is the part of the wedding ceremony in which the couple perform a ceremony symbolizing their unity and the tying together of two families. It's sometimes based in religion, but not always! Throughout my time as a wedding photographer, I've capture tons of unique unity ceremonies, both religious and not.

Here are a few of my favorite unique wedding ceremony ideas I've come across. Use them as inspiration for your own ceremony!

My Favorite Unique Unity Ceremony Ideas

1. Plant a tree.

For a unity ceremony with a natural touch, plant a tree! During this unity ceremony, the couple work together to plant a sapling (or another kind of plant) in a pot and surround it with soil. When you're done, you can say 'I do' before your tree, and if you have a green thumb, you can enjoy your tree for years to come! Plant it in your yard, watch it grow, and who knows? Maybe your grandchildren will get to play underneath it one day.

2. Light a unity candle.

The unity candle has been around for a while, but that doesn't mean you can't put your own unique spin on it! One of my couples used a blue candle they'd inherited from the groom's grandparents, who only lit the candle once a year on their anniversary. The bride and groom lit this unity candle for their wedding ceremony, and they plan to keep the tradition alive on their own anniversary.

If you don't have a family heirloom, use your unity candle to start a new tradition! You can commission a custom unity candle from a small business or go with one from your favorite local shop. Don't be afraid to take a long-standing wedding tradition and make it your own!

3. Tie knots.

This unity ceremony idea takes the collaboration of the unity candle and turns it into a unique piece of art you can keep forever. In this ceremony, the couple braids ropes or ties a knot together, symbolizing the coming together of two people and two families to create a strong bond.

This unity ceremony actually stems from a Bible verse, Ecclesiastes 4:12, "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." But I've seen non-religious couples put their own spin on it! If you're a couple of adventure seekers, tie a knot with rock climbing rope. If you enjoy boating, tie a sailing knot. No matter how you do it, physically 'tying the knot' is a beautiful representation of the bond you've created in your marriage.

4. Have a ring warming ceremony.

This unity ceremony is a great way to get your loved ones involved in the ceremony. The officiant introduces the ring warming ceremony, and then the couple's wedding bands are passed through the crowd (either tied together, in a mesh bag, or in a box). Everyone in attendance gets a moment to silently 'bless' the rings in their own way. They might say a prayer, think encouraging thoughts, or just send good vibes. Then, when everyone's had their turn, the couple exchanges their rings, now warmed by the love of their family and friends.

A word of warning, though: at a large wedding, the ring warming ceremony can take a long time. Be sure you have music queued up for this part of the ceremony!

5. Take a shot together!

Want to keep things fun at your wedding? Take a shot with your partner! Pick your favorite liquor, pour each other a shot (or offer shots to all your guests), and knock one back! It doesn't get any more fun than that!

Thank you so much for reading about my favorite unique ceremony ideas! I hope you found something that will work for your own ceremony.

There are a million ways to make your wedding ceremony your own. If you're looking for ideas, check out my blog for past weddings I've had the honor to shoot. 8 Mountain Wedding Venues in Chattanooga, TN

We all love the dreamy mountaintop elopement photos on Pinterest right now. The hazy light streaming through evergreens, the lush forests, the towering rock formations. But not every couple has the urge to hike the backcountry on their wedding day (or the budget to rent a ski resort out west), and many aren’t willing to sacrifice their guest list to have their dream mountain wedding. Why not pick a gorgeous mountain wedding venue here in Chattanooga?

You don’t have to elope in Colorado to get married in the mountains. You can host a wedding of any size and budget here in the Appalachian Mountains.

Why I Love Mountain Weddings

My local couples recognize the lure of the mountains, and many of them fell in love here. No matter the season, the foliage shows up. Go for the dense greens of summer, the copper colors of fall, or even the snowy hills in winter. You can’t go wrong.

Many of these venues also feature river views, a staple here in Chattanooga. Out-of-town guests can really get a feel for the area by driving up into the hills for your wedding and then back into town for drinks at their hotel. Some of these spots even offer their own accommodations! What’s more fun than a weekend in the hills with your closest friends and family, talking under the stars and cozying up in your cabin? (Or a private wedding weekend with your new spouse. Up to you!)

On top of that, there’s something cozy and intimate about a mountain wedding, even one with a large guest list. You can keep things super traditional or play up the vibes with cabin-themed decor. Either way, the hills make the perfect backdrop.

My Favorite Mountain Wedding Venues in Chattanooga

1. Gardens in the Gorge

If you’re looking for a mountain wedding venue that doesn’t sacrifice modern style, check out Gardens in the Gorge. The outdoor ceremony site works well in spring and fall, especially with the thick forest that surrounds the venue. Their main indoor space, Windsor Hall, is great for large receptions, and it can double as a ceremony space if the weather goes south.

Gardens in the Gorge is close to town, and it features four cottages for guests or bridal party members to rent for the weekend. Each of the cottages can accommodate four guests, so you could easily plan for a weekend getaway with your nearest and dearest.

Want to elope? You can do that here, too. Gardens in the Gorge will let you rent their space for just a few hours so you can host a private, intimate wedding away from the city. And like I said, it’s close enough to downtown for dinner or an afterparty.

2. Tennessee RiverPlace

This venue has a different feel from some of the others on this list, but it still offers an impressive mountain view. Located deep in the valley, Tennessee RiverPlace is a Spanish style mansion overlooking the river.

If you’re concerned about the weather, the mansion is plenty large enough to accommodate an indoor ceremony and reception. But if you’re getting married in late spring or early fall, I say take advantage of the outdoor space. You can say your vows right in front of the river and dance all night on the outdoor patio surrounded by mountains.

Again, this venue is just a few minutes from downtown Chattanooga, so your out-of-town guests can Uber there and back without issue (and your friends can party downtown after the reception ends).

The mansion on the river is definitely the show stopper at this venue, but you still get the dreamy mountain vibes.

3. The Gray Dove

This venue is dripping with Tennessee charm. The Gray Dove is a true barn venue nestled on a farm in the valley. As if the farm itself wasn’t beautiful enough, you also get a backdrop of rolling hills in the distance.

When you rent The Gray Dove, you get the farm for the weekend. In addition to the ceremony and reception spaces, your bridal party can stay the night in the 1920’s farmhouse onsite. And did I mention the groom’s suite has an arcade and pool table?

I always recommend this venue to couples who want a barn wedding and a fun weekend away with their friends. My tip: book for late spring or early fall. The barn itself isn’t air conditioned, but it feels amazing on a mild, breezy night.

A bridge and groom stand together under an octagon arbor in a field.A bride and groom walk arm-in-arm down a gravel road through an open field. A groom leans on a railing and smiles at a mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga, TN.

4. Hemlock Falls

While it may not offer all the amenities some of these other venues do, Hemlock Falls is one of my favorite places to shoot. It offers the same vibes as a secluded meadow elopement just a short ways from downtown Chattanooga.

There’s one cabin onsite (which is perfect for your wedding night!), but other than that, Hemlock Falls is a clean slate. If you’re a DIY-savvy bride who wants a mountain wedding on a budget, I highly recommend Hemlock Falls.

5. The Homestead

The Homestead at Cloudland Station is one of my all-time favorite mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga. It’s nestled in the valley with a beautiful view of Lookout Mountain and perfect for couples looking for a boho venue with serious style.

This is technically a barn venue, but it’s more modern than it is rustic. Plus, with both indoor and outdoor spaces, it’s perfect for all seasons and weather. The barn itself is 150 years old and includes a tented reception space outside, so your guests can take a break from dancing to enjoy the night air.

In addition to the ceremony and reception spaces, The Homestead also features onsite accommodations for your bridal party and guests (including a beautiful old house, a lodge, and two treehouses. Seriously.).

This is another venue that’s near enough to Chattanooga for a downtown afterparty. But you might not need one! The grounds are gorgeous, and the different on-site options make it a perfect all-in-one venue. You get the charm of the barn, the grandeur of the mountain landscape, and the modern look all in one. What’s not to love?

A bride and groom walk down the aisle together in an open field. A black and white photo of a bride and groom walking hand-in-hand down a brick path by a barn. A farmhouse surrounded by fall foliage at a mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga.

6. Grandview

You can’t get any closer to a mountaintop wedding than you can at Grandview. The venue is literally on Lookout Mountain. The courtyard provides a lush, green backdrop for spring and summer weddings, and the patio is perfect for an open-air reception.

My favorite thing about this venue is that it includes access to Rock City, one of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in Chattanooga. I love taking couples and their bridal parties to the suspension bridge for photos. And the natural rock formations make for stunning photos, especially at sunset. Think “Utah backcountry elopement” just a few miles from downtown Chattanooga. If a mountaintop wedding is your goal, you really can’t go wrong with Grandview.

A bridal party celebrates as the bride and groom kiss on a suspension bridge. An outdoor dining space at twilight, lit by twinkle lights and candles.

7. The Views at Sunset Ridge

While this venue isn’t technically in Chattanooga, it’s close enough that I had to include it. The Views at Sunset Ridge combines a modern, clean lodge look with unforgettable mountain views. Trust me, it’s worth the 30-minute drive.

The venue itself sits on a hill with 360 views of the surrounding mountains, which are highlighted by the dining hall’s picture frame windows. In contrast, the ceremony space is super cozy with its modern lodge vibes. When you walk out after the ceremony, you’re hit with the huge Tennessee sky.

I usually recommend The Views for winter weddings since the building is so beautiful, but it would really work well for any season. Whether you’re escaping the heat of summer or want to keep your guests warm in winter, this is the place to do it.

A groom dips his bride into a kiss in front of the Tennessee hills. A wide shot of an empty wedding ceremony space. The altar is at the base of wood stairs beneath a large cross. A bride poses with her bridesmaids, who are dressed in emerald green, in front of the hills at a mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga, TN.

8. The Venue

This is one of the most popular mountain wedding venues in Chattanooga for good reason. It’s near downtown, easy to get to, and has plenty of space indoors and out.

The Venue is great for couples who want a beautiful space they can make their own. Yes, The Venue has plenty of its own charm, but it’s also a bit of a blank canvas. You can really inject your own style into the place and get the mountain views you’re looking for. Win-win.

And my favorite part: there are tons of nearby spots I can whisk the couple off to for more photos. So you can get your ceremony photos in front of the freestanding stone fireplace, your couples’ portraits in the Tennessee hills, and then let loose on the dance floor under the stars.

Thank you so much for reading about my favorite mountain wedding venues in Chattanooga! I hope you found a spot that checks all the boxes for you.

I love all these venues, and they all have one thing in common: they highlight the natural beauty of the Tennessee mountains. I love shooting interesting venues, but I also love when a ceremony fits perfectly into the landscape. When you get married in a place like that, it feels so natural and real in a way that truly comes to life in your photos.

CHATTANOOGA DESTINATION ELOPEMENT IN THE CLOUDS | ANA + PAULO

Elopements have grown in popularity (and honestly, in style) in the past few years, and COVID has only made them more common. I’ve spoken to so many couples chasing the mountaintop elopement feeling. I tell them all the same thing: elope to Chattanooga! Just a two-hour drive from both Atlanta and Nashville, Chattanooga is the perfect elopement destination for couples looking to run away without straying too far from home.

Enjoy this sunrise Chattanooga elopement session with Ana and Paolo. If you’re planning your own elopement and looking for the right destination, let’s chat! I’ve got a few secret spots in mind.

CHATTANOOGA ELOPEMENT DESTINATION

After cancelling their wedding due to COVID, Ana and Paolo got married in a courthouse in Atlanta. They had been legally married for a little while before their Chattanooga destination elopement, but they still wanted to elope! Plus, they wanted an excuse to wear their wedding attire and create beautiful photos to look back on. Ana found me on Instagram, and after a call and some coordinating, she and Paolo hopped in their car around 2 a.m. to reach Chattanooga before sunrise.

Couples often overlook Chattanooga as an elopement destination, but the views and photo opportunities can't be beat, especially in this part of the country. This spot on Signal Mountain is one of my favorite elopement locations. You get a stunning view of the Tennessee River winding through the mountains, and the entire mountainside is bathed in golden light at sunrise. You can’t go wrong anywhere in Chattanooga when it comes to mountain views, but this state park location is such a gem.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Ana found me on Instagram, and she reached out with tons of questions. First, she specifically wanted to elope at this location near Chattanooga. She’d seen it featured on my Instagram, and she’d fallen in love with the mountains before we ever picked up the phone. Of course, I was down!

Ana wanted to make sure the photographer she entrusted with her Chattanooga elopement fit both her style and her expectations for skill level. Being a professional model, Ana works closely with photographers almost daily. (And I’m not just saying that because she’s gorgeous. She’s actually a professional model.) She knows just about as much about photography as any non-photographer could. Understandably, she had a specific vision for the shoot and very high expectations. Bring it on!

As an interracial couple, it was important to Ana and Paolo that their photographer know how to shoot their contrasting skin tones. If you’re not familiar with photography, this might seem like a simple requirement. Actually, shooting and editing contrasting skin tones is actually pretty difficult, especially for beginners.

Ana and I discussed what she wanted, and I shared samples of my past shoots. After our call, we decided we’d make a great team. She and Paolo packed up their wedding clothes and made their way to Chattanooga.

FIRST LOOK IN THE MOUNTAINS

Though they got legally married ahead of time, Ana and Paolo didn't wear their real wedding attire to the courthouse. The first look played a major role in this elopement session. They timed the drive from Atlanta perfectly, and they made it to the mountain just in time to get dressed and share their first look as the sun rose. It was magical.

Paolo wore a simple navy suit and bowtie, which perfectly contrasted Ana’s long, beaded gown. The sun glinting off the beading really brought the gown to life, and it made Ana look even more radiant.

CHATTANOOGA ELOPEMENT ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Ana knew she wanted to elope to Chattanooga, but not just for the mountains. She fell in love with the view above the clouds!

During the summer in Chattanooga, we sometimes get to witness a very particular, kind of rare weather phenomenon called cloud inversion. During cloud inversion, a layer of clouds sinks down from the mountaintops and onto the Tennessee River, settling in the gorge like a blanket. The result is this otherworldly, ethereal view above the clouds.

This happens in the summer and only at sunrise, so Ana and Paolo trusted me to find the perfect vantage point and day for their photoshoot. Especially with elopements, being your photographer often means more than just showing up day-of, taking your photos, and leaving. I often act as a guide for my couples. I get to coach them through the wedding planning process and set them up for unforgettable moments like these. It’s truly an honor to guide my couples into their dream wedding photos.

You deserve wedding photos that totally capture you and your partner (whether or not you’re a model!). I’d love to work with you to plan and capture a day that feels like you.

If you’ve got your heart set on a dreamy elopement in Chattanooga, please reach out! I’m here to guide you in the right direction and help you pick the perfect, secluded spot to exchange your vows.

Want more elopement inspiration? Check out my blog. I’ve shot some stunning elopements over the years! (Just don’t blame me if those photos give you the elopement bug.)

LGBTQ Wedding in Chattanooga | A Styled Shoot at Moxy Chattanooga

When Moxy Chattanooga contacted me to photograph their styled LGBTQ wedding in Chattanooga, I jumped at the opportunity! I am so excited to show you this shoot, which was also featured by Equally Wed. Equally Wed is a beautiful resource for modern LGBTQ+ couples and promotes LGBTQ+ inclusive wedding professionals like me!

LGBTQ WEDDING IN CHATTANOOGA

Moxy Chattanooga, a hotel downtown, offers a wonderful venue space for weddings. While many venues aren’t yet open to LGBTQ weddings in Chattanooga, Moxy planned and hosted this styled LGBTQ wedding to highlight the fact that they are an inclusive venue for queer couples. I was beyond thrilled to work with Moxy and their event coordinators as their photographer for the day.

Something that made me appreciate this shoot even more: Moxy intentionally chose LGBTQ models. Although the models in these photos are not a couple, they are members of the LGBTQ community. They also were major players in creating the final looks of this styled wedding!

Alecia, a local artist, designed the backdrop at the ceremony site helped style other aspects of the day. Christina was the makeup artist on site. You can see more of their work at the links I’ve included below.

Fall Wedding at The Homestead at Cloudland Station | Caitlin + Joe

Caitlin and Joe’s fall wedding at The Homestead at Cloudland Station showcased the beauty of their love as well as this gorgeous property in the North Georgia mountains.

The Homestead at Cloudland Station wedding venue

The Homestead venue is nestled at the base of Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia about 15 minutes south of Chattanooga. Cloudland Station is a 450-acre property with multiple planned neighborhoods and an intentional community vibe. As they were envisioning their ideal community, the developers decided to incorporate a venue for weddings and other events.

The results, a 150-year-old, hand-pegged Amish barn, a carriage house, and an Italianate architecture farmhouse called Peacock Hall, sit on an antique brick carriage path just beyond the property’s private Lake Angela. These buildings, which make up The Homestead at Cloudland Station, surround a green lawn--totally perfect for an outdoor wedding!

From best friends to bride and groom

These two are my kind of people. They’re very easy-going and gentle-natured, and they love to goof off and laugh with each other. We have a few friends in common, so I was excited to hear from them in the early planning stages. Joe and Caitlin have a really sweet love story. In short, they met as co-workers and became best friends. Even after they stopped working together, they maintained a close friendship. After awhile of each thinking “Who us? No, we’d never date!” they realized that maybe there was actually something there, that this person had all the qualities they’d been looking for in a partner. They developed feelings for each other, and the rest is history.

Before the big day, on my pre-wedding questionnaire, I ask couples What is one thing you would tell to future couples planning their dream wedding? I love Caitlin’s advice so much. She says, “Through all the researching, pinteresting, and budgeting, make sure you remember what the day is for. At the end of the day, I just want to be married to my best friend!”

On the big day, because they planned their wedding for later in the day, the sun wasn’t directly over us. In fact, once it passed over the barn, we had a perfect balance of light and shade for their portraits and outdoor ceremony! It’s always nice when nature does you a solid on the lighting and nobody has to squint through their own wedding. Caitlin and Joe planned a first look ahead of the ceremony, and we shot most of their bride and groom and bridal party portraits beforehand, too. As a result, they had more time at the reception with their guests!

Your Chattanooga Wedding Photographer...
and everything else, too

I like to provide FULL SERVICE to my couples during their portrait sessions and at their weddings. I always have a go-bag of wedding emergency essentials! It started raining during the ceremony? Here’s an extra umbrella! Mom’s dress ripped? Let me grab my sewing kit! Rain is killing your sparkler exit (surprise rain is sort of thing around here)? These days I’m keeping my car stocked with glow sticks! Do you have any go-bag essentials suggestions for me?

For Caitlin and Joe, the “emergency” wasn’t anything major. But after we finished shooting their family photos in front of Peacock Hall, they needed to sign the marriage license. We realized everyone had already gone into the barn for the reception, and so I signed as their witness! Rachael Crowe, Chattanooga Wedding Photographer...and everything else. Gotta get my business cards updated. Haha! Caitlin's thumbs-up in this photo kills me. Too cute! I really enjoy my job, especially in these moments. Wedding days can be stressful, and I like feeling like I contributed a little bit extra to make the day easier or flow more smoothly.

Getting that barn wedding venue vibe in Chattanooga

I can’t begin to tell you how peaceful and lovely this property is. If you’re searching for barn wedding venues in Chattanooga, definitely add The Homestead at Cloudland Station to your list to check out. I’ve photographed many farm or barn weddings (The Gray Dove, Crabtree Farms, private family properties), and I love how unique each one looks. I have attended several events now in The Homestead’s barn, and I’ve seen it decorated differently each time. You can have a rustic barn feel, or you can create a more modern look. Yes, you can have an elegant barn wedding!

Caitlin and Joe kept decorations very simple for their wedding, and I love that that puts the beauty of their connection front-and-center. Caitlin added a few floral accents along the aisle during the ceremony. She also designed the table centerpieces and decorations herself for the reception, keeping a tastefully simple aesthetic. The couple allowed the stunning beauty of nature and the venue play a big role in their day. They got married in mid-November, and the colors they chose for their floral bouquets and their bridal party’s attire align so well with the fall colors of the Lookout Mountain scenery.

Bride and groom portraits at The Homestead at Cloudland Station

After the reception was underway, I snuck Joe and Caitlin out for some sunset photos. Gotta make time for golden hour! The bride and bridesmaid’s bouquets were designed by Petaline, and I am still drooling over the rich jewel tones of Caitlin’s bouquet. I am not sure which of these is my favorite shot, to be honest, but I loved when Joe held Caitlin’s bouquet while she twirled in that gorgeous dress.

Dance your hearts out, Joe and Caitlin

Dear Joe and Caitlin, I am so grateful you chose me to be your photographer for your wedding at The Homestead at Cloudland Station. You are both such lovely, fun people, and your friendship and care for each other really shines. I wish you all the happiness that your years together will bring. Cheers to you!

Vendor shout-out: Mia + May Events

Besides the incredible venue at Cloudland Station itself, I’ve got to give a shout-out to another of the vendors that made Joe and Caitlin’s wedding a complete dream day. Mia + May Events coordinated all the moving parts seamlessly. I love working with Danielle and Jillian! I love that they always have 2 people at every event: one person to manage all the vendors and make sure things are kept on task, and one person to attend to anything the bride and groom might need throughout the day. Talk about a dream team! I’ve listed the other vendors at the bottom of this blog, but I really wanted to make sure to tell you about Mia + May Events because I’ve been privileged to work with them a few times now.

Planning a fall wedding in Tennessee

Before I go, let’s talk a sec about the weather. Y’all know everybody loves October and thinks it’s the most “fall” month, but in southeast Tennessee, we can still get some pretty hot days through October. Also, in our southeast corner of the state, we really see some of the best fall colors in November! So if you’re scouring Pinterest and wondering when to schedule your colorful fall wedding...give us Chattanooga wedding photographers a break on October. I mean, definitely book October, but spread some of that love into November. I think you'll find it's very much what you're hoping for!

The Old Woolen Mill Wedding, Cleveland | Abbey + Graham

Abbey and Graham, holy cow. What a sweet couple from start to finish. Before I get into the wedding and photos, let me tell you just one thing. Abbey and Graham ended their wedding reception at Weaver's Room at The Old Woolen Mill in Cleveland (TN) dancing and screaming “You make my heart explode!” from The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!’s song “Ride Friendship.” If each couple and wedding had its own theme song, this is the perfect one for these two. I won’t judge if you play it while you scroll through their gallery. 😉 Enjoy!

Bride and groom cuddle in the bleachers, her hand in his hair and her bouquet next to them.

Ahead of their wedding, I ask each couple to complete a questionnaire so I get a few important phone numbers, a shot-list, and some other wedding day details. On my questionnaire, I also ask for the couple to share an abridged version of their love story with me. Abbey and Graham have built a friendship over the past 9 years. At a few points, they wanted to start dating, but the timing never seemed to work out. Once they decided to finally go for it, it didn’t take them long to realize they wanted to be partners for life. No matter the complications, the joy would be worth it!

How to set the tone for your wedding, Part 1: Location

Abbey and Graham planned their wedding ceremony in a former elementary school gymnasium. Yes, you read that correctly. The school now houses several non-profits, including the couple’s church, so they felt right at home hosting their wedding here.

I love what Abbey wrote about their ceremony location on her blog. “Being in a gymnasium for our wedding speaks to the youthfulness of mine and Graham’s relationship. We’re a couple of weirdos crushing on one another, who just like playing together.” (Is your heart exploding yet?!)

Shaking things up a little bit from a traditional processional, the couple's parents walked them each to meet under the wedding arch at the same time. Abbey and Graham used this moment to symbolize equal forces coming together and the efforts they and their families have made to bring the moment of their marriage into fruition.

Setting the tone for your wedding, Part 2: Florals
AKA Southerly Flower Farm with another big win

The team at Southerly Flower Farm created stunning floral arrangements for this wedding. Stunning. It’s hard to match a couple’s feelings of play and whimsy with a bridal bouquet, and Southerly Flower Farm nailed it. From the floral displays on the simple, copper pipe wedding arch to the reception centerpieces, each piece is a beautiful part of the playful tone of Abbey and Graham’s wedding story. Abbey wore custom earrings from Olie & Co. which paired perfectly with the flowers in her hair. They were so cool! And I smile every time I see that close-up of Graham's pink flower tie. Such unique details for these two.

Between the florals and the shockingly beautiful lighting, I’m still totally floored at how gorgeous this wedding was.

Weaver's Room at The Old Woolen Mill, Cleveland, TN

The Cleveland Woolen Mill was constructed in the late 1800s, but it went out of use in the 1970s. Recently the mill has been restored and given new purpose, including hosting wedding receptions, for instance.

At their reception, the couple presented a barbecue buffet for dinner, and Birch Tree Boba set up a boba tea stand. Such a fun addition to a reception! And Abbey's father made their wedding cake, which completely blows my mind. Abbey and Graham brought the copper pipe arch from their ceremony, set it up against an exposed brick wall, and created a photo booth for their guests. Several friends and family members gave emotional and heart-warming toasts, moving both Graham and Abbey to tears.

Setting the tone for your wedding and reception, Part 3: Music

On the wedding questionnaire, Abbey and Graham confessed that their biggest priority in planning their wedding was creating the perfect playlist for their reception! (Admittedly would probably be a main priority for me, too. Ha!) The couple is musical, so instead of a traditional “wedding party,” they had a “wedding chorus” of about 20 people. During the processional, the wedding chorus sang a song that Abbey and Graham had written together.

Later, at their reception at Weaver's Room at The Old Woolen Mill, Cleveland, Graham and his mom set a sentimental pace with an acoustic version of Cindy Lauper’s “Time After Time.” Abbey and her dad danced together to a Billy Joel song they both really love. Then Graham and Abbey broke it down to Youth Lagoon’s “17.″

When the rest of the crowd joins them out on the dance floor, you can tell the night’s just not gonna end anytime soon. And as I look back through the photos from their reception, I think their playlist was very well received!

I started this blog by telling you how this wedding ended. So I'll end with that as well. After Niel and Jen from The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! led the crowd in their song “Ride Friendship,” Abbey and Graham headed into the night through a tunnel of sparklers.

Lookout Mountain Destination Wedding | Jim + Emily

You know I love to travel to photograph a wedding, but, as a Chattanooga wedding photographer, there’s something really special about a couple choosing my own city for their big day! That’s exactly what Emily and Jim did. Although they’re both from the Southeast, Emily and Jim live in New York City (Brooklyn) now. When they considered destinations, a Lookout Mountain wedding with downtown Chattanooga wedding reception took the cake. 😉

A destination wedding in Chattanooga, Tennessee?

Yes! Chattanooga proved to be a perfect location for their wedding and reception. It's close enough for Jim’s Alabama family, practically down the street from where Emily grew up, and accessible by direct flights for all their New York friends. Talk about an all-around win!

This couple was a lot of fun from the beginning to the end of the day. They got ready at The Westin Chattanooga with downtown Chattanooga setting the scene in the background, and as the bride and groom dressed, some of the fine details of their day began to emerge.

Emily’s dress offered a peek of her bumblebee tattoo, which served as inspiration for their day with bumblebee details popping up throughout the wedding and reception.

Lookout Mountain Wedding Ceremony

Emily and Jim’s ceremony took place on Lookout Mountain at the Rock City group pavilion. The covered, open-air venue provided me with tons of natural light for shooting, and the park-like scenery was a gorgeous backdrop. Emily’s grandmother designed all the floral arrangements for the wedding, as well as the floral garland over the wedding arch.

All ceremonies are individual and special, and this one was no different. During most ceremonies, the bridal party stands with the bride and groom; however, during this one, they sat with other friends and family. Without extra folks in the shot, the simple lines of the pavilion and wedding arch elegantly frame Jim and Emily. As a photographer, this is almost one of those things you don’t fully notice or appreciate until you’re in editing mode!

The couple exchanged tender looks and heartfelt promises in front of their family and loved ones, including their favorite pooch. And, at the moment of their kiss, the officiant stepped aside so you can see how comfortably Jim and Emily fit together.

Following the ceremony we’d planned some time for bride and groom portraits out at Sunset Rock, which you might remember as one of my Top 5 Chattanooga Engagement Photo Locations! Y’all. Remember what I said about the shoes?! Don’t worry--Emily did not hike to Sunset Rock in those incredible heels! I know you were wondering.

Downtown Chattanooga Wedding Reception

Once we finished the portraits at Sunset Rock, we joined up with the rest of the guests in downtown Chattanooga, where Jim and Emily hosted their candlelit reception at Alleia. The space was a terrific fit for Jim and Emily’s classy and modern aesthetic. And can we talk just a sec about those cakes? Sweet Angel Cakes created both simple, elegant cakes, and they suited the couple’s style perfectly.

After a delicious dinner, the couple led the rest of the crowd onto the dance floor for live music from Oh No Stereo and hours of dancing! Between all the food and dancing, I was able to sneak the bride and groom away to Alleia’s private patio for a quick photo session. I needed to see that tulle in action. Who doesn’t love a good twirl?

At the end of the evening, Jim and Emily’s family and friends gathered for a sparkler send-off, and OMG look at these smiles. A couple more kisses and twirls to make this wedding photographer’s entire night.

Zion Winter Elopement | Liz + Andrew

This wedding day totally affirmed my love for offbeat, out-of-the-ordinary weddings! Liz and Andrew’s snowy Zion winter elopement was so incredible that I can’t wait to experience more elopement days with my engaged couples!

Liz and Andrew are the coolest, most easy-going and fun couple! We traveled to Zion National Park for their last-minute elopement. Even though it wasn’t what they had originally planned, the day turned out to be so beautiful and so them

Traditional wedding plans become untraditional elopement plans

Liz had been following me on social media for awhile after she’d seen me in action shooting some of her friend’s weddings. When she and Andrew got engaged, we started chatting back and forth about their May wedding plans. While they had considered eloping, they knew that their families would be sad about not being included. I gave her some tips and encouraged her to go with her gut and be untraditional, but she was still hesitant.

A little while later, when I was unable to attend a bridal show, I passed my tickets to Liz. She and Andrew walked into the show, and they immediately felt waves of overwhelm (holla if that’s you!). They turned right around and walked out! In that instant, they decided that they would elope instead, so they went home and cancelled all of their wedding plans.

Planning a last-minute elopement

I was in Maine for a session when I got her email telling me that they were cancelling their May wedding and had decided to elope in Zion National Park the following month. I was like “WAIT...Hold up! WHAT?! Can you get married in Zion National Park?” After some quick research, I replied to her email with, “Uhhhh….I can shoot your elopement in Zion! And I’ll help you plan it!”

With only three weeks’ notice, we planned their whole elopement together: I bought my plane ticket, got permits to photograph inside the National Park, and sorted out a local officiant. Side note: Getting to add--and then check off--Zion National Park elopement photography to my bucket list was awesome!

Zion National Park winter elopement

Also known as: Getting married in a snowstorm!

When I landed in Salt Lake City, I met up with Liz and Andrew and a few of the friends they’d invited out. Everyone was welcoming, easy going, and so chill. While they went skiing and snowboarding, I ran a few errands and picked up Liz’s bouquet.

On elopement day, we woke up super early to drive the five hours from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park. It was snowing hard on the way there, and quickly turned into a blizzard. Luckily, I come prepared for any weather situations, so I had thick socks, hand-warmers, extra gloves...you name it!

Once we arrived to a private property just outside of Zion National Park, we were struck by the gorgeous views. We met the officiant we’d hired, and Liz and Andrew got dressed--in the cold and snow--on either side of the car so they wouldn’t see each other. The best part about an outdoor elopement in the winter? When you can pull up the hem of your dress to reveal your thick, wool socks and hiking boots underneath!

Bride and Groom First Look Surprise

The couple wanted to do a private first look, and, as I was telling Liz to go tap Andrew on the shoulder to signal to him to turn around, her eyes lit up and she said, “Can I slap him on the ass?!” I busted out laughing and said, “OMG, yes!” She responded with a “Hell yeah!” and smacked him hard! His reaction was sooo funny! He laughed and then teared up in the same moment.

The officiant led us to the ceremony spot, and their elopement ceremony was so sweet and very super chill, just like them. It really fit their personalities so well, which was extra special. I loved being part of this wedding-turned-elopement for so many reasons, but these incredible moments when everything just feels...right...that’s what it’s about.

Bride and Groom Portraits at Canyon Overlook in Zion National Park

Also known as: Bride and groom portraits in a white-out!

After the ceremony, we did some group portraits and then headed into Zion National Park. By this point, it was snowing pretty heavily. Originally, we’d planned to hike to Angels Landing, one of the top 3 viewpoints in Zion, but the snow and wind were crazy. So I did some quick research, and we found another overlook that was a shorter, safer hike.

We grabbed our things and hiked over to Canyon Overlook. When we arrived at the overlook, it was a whiteout! As in: we couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of our faces. The ground was also very slippery, which definitely leveled up the “adventure” part of “adventure wedding photography.” Ha! After we took some photos and enjoyed the magic of winter in Zion, we hiked back to the vehicles and headed back to Salt Lake City....then onward home to Chattanooga.

Considering a Winter Elopement in Zion National Park?

Liz and Andrew’s elopement was one really long, awesome day. While it was challenging because of the weather, it was very special and perfectly them. I’m really glad they decided to do what felt true and right for them, including skipping the traditional wedding for an elopement.

Zion has some amazing hikes and unparalleled iconic viewpoints, even during a blizzard. One thing to know, however, if you’re considering a winter elopement: you may not have the same views as other times of the year. That being said, as long as you’re prepared for the cold and snow, a Zion winter elopement is totally worth it.

How to include family and friends in your elopement

Liz and Andrew’s concerns about upsetting their family with an elopement are legitimate. Many couples face this same worry. But just because you elope doesn’t mean you can’t include your family and friends in celebrating!

Besides inviting a select few family members or friends to attend your ceremony, consider a post-elopement reception for the whole crew at home. This is the direction Liz and Andrew took. A few months after their Zion winter wedding, they hosted a reception in Chattanooga, Tennessee with their family and friends. This way, everyone they loved back at home still got to spend time with them, celebrate their marriage, and enjoy a killer party!

You guys know I will travel wherever you want to take me for your elopement or wedding. I’m down to photograph pretty much any destination wedding or just about every adventure elopement you could imagine.

Bohemian Festival Wedding | Margaret + Garrison

Margaret and Garrison’s bohemian festival wedding is one of the most interesting weddings I’ve had the honor to photograph. I’m so excited to show it to you!

This couple are eclectic masterminds: Margaret is the creator and entrepreneur behind Bohemian Seed, modernizing and upcycling vintage clothing, and Garrison is a concert promoter. While planning their wedding, they knew they wanted their wedding to be a combination of their favorite things – nature, vintage decor, vegetarian food, good music, and community.

This wedding has been featured on:
Festival Brides  // Sisters in Law  // Boho Weddings  // Hometown Bride Guide

From music festival to bohemian wedding festival

Margaret shared with me how they met. “We actually lived in the same city for four years and had so many mutual friends--it’s a wonder we didn’t meet sooner. We met briefly at a show that Garrison was promoting, but we didn’t get to know each other until months later when we were both at a music festival in Nashville. My favorite band at the time, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, was performing on stage. At one point, the lead singer jumped into the crowd and was passing the mic to members of the audience to join in on singing along. I ran as close to the front as I could, and somehow he handed me the microphone. The cameras panned to me, and Garrison recognized me from the big screen. We met up after the show and have been inseparable ever since.”

Bride and groom waterfall portraits at Foster Falls near Chattanooga, Tennessee

We started off Margaret and Garrison’s wedding day by hiking to Foster Falls for their bride and groom portrait session. They got ready along the path, helping each other into their unique, bohemian bazaar-themed wedding garb.

Margaret wore an antique Afghan wedding dress that she modernized into the bohemian wedding dress of her dreams. Garrison wore his favorite pair of pants, a vintage Russian wedding shirt, and a scarf that Margaret made from the remnants of her dress alterations. They were both barefoot as well, though Margaret adorned gold gypsy anklets with jingle bells for pizzaz! Truly one-of-a-kind duds for their one-of-a-kind wedding.

These forest and waterfall photos are swoon-worthy. I loved capturing such tenderness between Margaret and Garrison.

Bohemian festival wedding at Hemlock Falls

After their portraits at Foster Falls, we headed back to Hemlock Falls for their boho-bazaar wedding ceremony.

To keep everything entirely DIY, Margaret and Garrison pulled together borrowed pieces from friends and family, pieces they had collected specifically for the event, and even incorporated pieces from their own home into the ceremony and reception. One of their close friends officiated with a script written especially for them. They didn’t even purchase florals for decor! Margaret used Japanese lanterns growing behind her family friend’s house, bowls of fruit, and flowers foraged along the path to Foster Falls.

I personally love how they used these rugs to line the aisle and create a dance floor! Such a cool idea.

When it comes to planning such a big event, Margaret offers this advice to other couples: “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Don’t overthink it. Be present, and enjoy each moment because what they say is true: months and months of planning goes by in just a few hours. It all happens SO fast. Take a deep breath and just enjoy each other.”

Later, when asked about their favorite moment of the day, Margaret said, “I can’t choose just one special moment! The whole day felt like a dream turned reality. Everything from walking down the aisle, hearing Taylor’s script that he wrote so specifically for us, exchanging vows, the food, the first dance, watching the sunset. It was all so purely and truly magical.” It sounds like their bohemian festival wedding dreams came true.
