MODERN ELEGANT WEDDING AT TENNESSEE RIVERPLACE | LAINE + BRAD

You ever met a couple and thought, "Wow, you two are just going to throw the coolest wedding ever." That's Laine and Brad! After having so much fun during their engagement photo session, I was thrilled when they asked me to shoot their wedding at Tennessee Riverplace here in Chattanooga.

Enjoy this elegant (and a little edgy) wedding from last fall, and if you're planning your own dream wedding, shoot me a message!

PLANNING THEIR DREAM WEDDING AT TENNESSEE RIVERPLACE

After their engagement session, Laine and Brad decided to book me to shoot their wedding at Tennessee Riverplace last fall. And I'm so glad! Their engagement session was so much fun, and they allowed me tons of artistic freedom. I had a feeling their wedding would be just as cool.

Due to COVID, Laine and Brad did have to cut down their guest list a bit, but they were still able to host a full wedding - complete with ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception.

As with her engagement photos, Laine had a clear vision of what she wanted for her wedding day. I met her the morning of the wedding as she was getting ready. In true Laine fashion, she picked out this killer vintage-style dress, bold blue earrings, and pointed white leather boots. She just exudes cool.

When I met up with Brad, he'd already donned his burgundy suit and tie, and he was ready to see his bride! After a few solo shots of each of them, it was time for the first look.

I set Laine and Brad up in this quiet alcove near the main building, and they got to see each other for the first time under autumn leaves bathed in afternoon light. It was a sweet, simple moment perfect for these two.

IMPROMPTU SUNSET PHOTOS BEFORE THE CEREMONY

Just like at their engagement session, Laine and Brad gave me tons of room to get creative with their photos. They knew they wanted a unique look and tons of different shots, so they scheduled plenty of time into their day specifically for photos. I was able to sit, think, and really piece together each shot with intention. As you can tell, the results were worth the extra time.

When I shoot weddings, I'm always trying to capture a healthy mix of posed and candid shots. These two, though, are masters at posing. Laine has done some modeling before, but she's also hearing impaired, so Brad helped me communicate with her when I needed to readjust them. For the most part, though, the poses were her idea! She had a vision for her photos, and she absolutely killed it.

As Laine and Brad started to shuffle off for the ceremony, I realized that the sun was going to set during their vows. It was a perfectly clear day, and I didn't want them to miss the gorgeous sunset light, so I asked them to push their ceremony back by just five minutes. We ran off, snapped a few final photos during golden hour, and got back before their guests even realized we were late!

A SPECIAL PHOTO REQUEST

Like I said, Laine and Brad were more than willing to give me creative freedom during their wedding photos. They had just one special request: to recreate a specific photo from their engagement session.

We stopped in this sunny field surrounded by rolling hills, got into position, and recreated the original image almost perfectly. I love the shot, and Laine even said she wants to hang the photos side-by-side in their home.

There's no need to show up on your wedding day with a mile-long list of shots you want, but I do love creating these special images with my couples. We can recreate your first photo together, your parents' wedding photos, or - like Laine and Brad - your favorite shot from your engagement session. I'm always down to add that personal touch!

AN ELEGANT OUTDOOR CEREMONY AT TENNESSEE RIVERPLACE

Laine and Brad exchanged vows under an arbor on the Tennessee Riverplace grounds. Behind them, the river flowed gently and the autumn leaves just barely shifted in the breeze. The weather could not have been more perfect, and the setting sun provided gorgeous, glowy light for their simple ceremony.

After they said "I do," Laine and Brad snuck away for a private dinner together. I'm a big fan of scheduling alone time into your wedding day, especially between the ceremony and reception. These are your first few moments as a married couple, and you don't want to spend them being swarmed by a crowd. Don't be afraid to sneak away and spend a few minutes basking in that just-married feelings.

A FUN, ARTSY OUTDOOR RECEPTION AT TENNESSEE RIVERPLACE

For their reception, Laine and Brad had a vision of an elegant but artsy outdoor dinner. The patio was strung with Edison bulbs, and there were tiny touches of gold throughout the decor to bring everything together. The Copper Quail supplied all the vintage pieces and really brought the couple's vision to life. They also put together the gorgeous floral arbor for the ceremony. I've shot a few weddings with them in the past, and their decor never disappoints. If your Pinterest boards are full of vintage tableware, big velvet armchairs, and ornate rugs, check out The Copper Quail. (Pssst, winter brides! You can also rent vintage fur wraps from them!)

To keep their guests entertained, the couple planned a cocktail hour... with a twist! Just as everyone grabbed their drinks and started to settle in, a group of drag queens burst in and performed a show! They totally took the guests by surprise, and the theatrics put everyone in a great mood headed into the reception.

Catering was covered by Events With Taste, an amazing local vendor here in Chattanooga. They even had a coffee bar ready for the guests when they arrived to the ceremony! They served dinner on a gorgeous farmhouse-style table, and the great food and drinks kept everyone happy (and warm!) as the sun went down. If you're on the hunt for your perfect caterer, I can't recommend Events With Taste highly enough.

Even with the pared-down guest list, Laine and Brad's reception was a party. After a banquet-style dinner, everyone shifted to the dance floor. They danced to a live band under the stars, mingled with their guests, and kept the party going long into the night.

I love every wedding I shoot, but there's something special about seeing a couple's personality really shine through on the day. Laine and Brad's wedding was entirely them: modern and elegant with a little artsy edge. I won't be forgetting this wedding anytime soon, and I don't think their guests will either.

Engagement Photos in Coolidge Park & Renaissance Park

If you're looking for a location that's totally "Chattanooga," you really can't go wrong with shooting your engagement photos in Coolidge Park or Renaissance Park.

These two parks sit on opposite sides of the Market Street Bridge in downtown Chattanooga. While they have different vibes, they're both classic **engagement photo destinations. Plus, since they're so close to each other, we can hit both during your engagement session!

Here's everything you need to know about shooting your engagement photos in Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park. If you're still looking for a photographer, I'd love to hear from you!

COOLIDGE PARK, A CHATTANOOGA CLASSIC

When locals think about downtown Chattanooga, they most likely envision Coolidge Park. It's a classic landmark downtown and a popular destination for both tourists and Chattanooga natives. On a sunny day, it'll be full of families on picnics and friends grilling out.

Of the two parks, Coolidge is the more manicured one. It features tons of paved paths, lush landscaping, and stone fountains. It's also super accessible, offers plenty of parking, and provides a great view of the city and the Market Street Bridge. We can get a wide variety of shots in the park itself, and then we can dip under the Market Street Bridge or hit the Walnut St pedestrian walking bridge for a different backdrop.

The only downside to shooting engagement photos in Coolidge Park is that they don't allow dogs or alcohol in the park itself. (Sad, I know.) If you want to include your pup in your engagement photos, we'll probably have to go slip over to the Renaissance Park side.

FUN ENGAGEMENT PHOTO IDEAS IN COOLIDGE PARK

As if the landscaping wasn't pretty enough, Coolidge Park is also home to a few interactive elements that can make your engagement photos even more dynamic.

My favorite (and everyone's favorite, really) is the carousel. The antique carousel was built in 1894, and it still features over 50 hand-carved wooden animals. Plus, you can ride it for $1! I love taking my couples on a ride on the carousel for some fun, playful images with tons of rich colors.

If you're really down for an adventure, we can also visit the fountains. I usually shoot my family photo sessions here, but it's fun for all ages! You can kick off your shoes, run through the fountains, and splash around for a while at the end of your session. No judgement here!

If you're down for a more chill experience, you can always pack a picnic, grab an ice cream cone at the local shop, or go for a stroll along the river. Whatever you do, the city views are unmatched and the park is gorgeous. You can't go wrong!

RENAISSANCE PARK, A LITTLE SLICE OF WILDERNESS

On the other side of the Market Street Bridge, there's Renaissance Park. It's not as manicured as Coolidge Park, but in my opinion, that's what makes it so cool. If we shoot your engagement photos in Renaissance Park, you can get those outdoorsy, middle-of-nowhere vibes without ever leaving downtown.

If you're the kind of couple who loves grabbing a beer downtown just as much as you love a hike in the woods, let's hit up Renaissance Park. Since it's in the heart of Chattanooga, we can start at your favorite bar, snap a few photos on the streets downtown, and at sunset end your engagement photo session in Renaissance Park. You get all the good vibes - urban and rural - without driving an hour outside of town or hiking up a mountain.

And even better, you can bring your dog! Seriously, what more could you want?

OUTDOORSY ENGAGEMENT PHOTO IDEAS IN RENAISSANCE PARK

If you saw some of my engagement photos from Renaissance Park, you'd never know they were taken in downtown Chattanooga. Because the park is so wooded, you get a lot more privacy than you would in Coolidge Park. It still gets busy on nice days, but you won't be fighting any crowds or dodging picnickers.

Like Coolidge Park, Renaissance Park has plenty of interactive elements to add some interest to your engagement photos. My favorites are the walking bridges and water features. Instead of fountains, Renaissance Park is dotted with natural ponds and streams. We might even spot some wildlife!

You can totally rock the picnic look in Renaissance Park, but it also makes for some great moody images. The dark woods, stone stairs, and overgrown grasses make for a rugged, edgy look that's totally different from the Coolidge Park vibe.

ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS IN COOLIDGE & RENAISSANCE PARK - THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Coolidge Park gets busy on nice days, so if you're camera shy or nervous about crowds, this may not be the best spot.
  • There are no dogs allowed in Coolidge Park itself, but they are allowed in Renaissance Park.
  • Both parks are closed off once a year for the Moon River Festival. Check the Moon River Festival schedule to make sure it won't interfere with your engagement photo session.
  • Renaissance Park does offer some paved trails, but many of them are dirt. They're well-kept but not quite as accessible for wheelchairs or other medical devices.
  • We can visit both parks during your engagement photo session! They're close enough that we can start downtown and then hit the two parks as the sun starts to set.

My Favorite Mountain Engagement Photo Locations in Chattanooga

You can take engagement photos just about anywhere - your house, your favorite restaurant, even your grocery store - but you can't go wrong with the classic mountaintop look. Lucky for us, Chattanooga offers several mountain engagement photo locations, each with their own charm!

These are my favorite engagement photo spots with wide, open mountain views. If you want to shoot in one of these locations (or anywhere else for that matter), let's chat!

Couple embraces on a mountain overlook during their engagement photo session near Chattanooga.

My Favorite Mountain Engagement Photo Locations in Chattanooga

Sunset Rock

The Sunset Rock overlook on Lookout Mountain has it all: mountain views, the winding river, and of course, gorgeous sunset light. It's one of my go-to spots no matter the season. The pine trees surrounding the rock are lush year-round, and the valley looks amazing even in winter. In fall, you get an entire array of colors spilled across the rolling hills.

Plus, the hike there and back is only 0.3 miles round-trip! That's short enough that you can get there and back in formalwear if need be. Caitlin and James went for a semi-formal look and rocked the sunset vibes. They even brought their pup!

Sunset Rock is also a great option if you want to hit multiple locations during your engagement session. It's only about 15 minutes away from downtown Chattanooga, so we can grab a drink and shoot some photos downtown before heading up the mountain.

The only downside is that this spot gets busy, especially when the weather is nice. I like to ask my clients to arrive early so we can get a spot in the parking lot and hang out until the light gets good. Expect a crowd, and if you don't want any eyes on you while you get handsy with your partner, let's pick a more private engagement photo location.

Hang Gliding Launch

You won't find this spot on Google Maps, and that's exactly why I love it!

Chattanooga has a huge outdoor sports scene, and it's a popular hang gliding destination. There's a hang gliding launch (basically a wooded ramp to nowhere) on the opposite side of Lookout Mountain as Sunset Rock. Just a ways past the launch, there's a pull-off where friends can gather to watch hang gliders take the plunge. This is where we'll be shooting!

This spot offers a beautiful view of the valley, and it's probably the most accessible of all the locations on this list. You pull over on the side of the road, walk about 10 feet, and you're there! The only downside is that there's not a ton of variety here. I'd recommend we get a few shots at this overlook and then head around the mountain to find some different backdrops.

On the Ocoee

While this spot on the Ocoee River is technically in Benton, but it's close enough to Chattanooga that I make the drive with plenty of my couples. The fall colors were so rich during Chris and Brandon's engagement session, and the mist on the mountains made for a picture-perfect backdrop.

This is one of my favorite locations, and it's perfect for adventurous couples. There are docks, rocky rivers, mountain overlooks, watering holes, picnic areas, you name it. Whatever outdoorsy vibes you want, you can get them here.

Plus, unlike some of the spots closer to the city, this area looks wild in photos. Lookout Mountain is gorgeous, but if you're going for a more wilderness-y look, I highly recommend driving a bit outside the city.

Another bonus: This area is rarely busy. We might meet a few other hikers, but we won't be fighting crowds like we would closer to Chattanooga.

For my Chattanooga couples, you're looking at an hour's drive to this location. But if you want a great view that's different from the classic Chattanooga spots, it's definitely worth the drive! Just plan ahead as there aren't many gas stations on the mountain itself. (By the way, I'm always down to carpool!)

Couple kisses on a mountain overlook during their engagement photo session near Chattanooga. Couple sits together on a mountain overlook during their engagement photo session near Chattanooga.

Prentice Cooper State Forest on Signal Mountain

One of my favorite areas for mountain engagement photos near Chattanooga is Signal Mountain. This particular spot offers a gorgeous overlook of the Tennessee River Gorge. This overlook is about a 30-40 minute drive from downtown Chattanooga. While it's not far mileage-wise, the reason this overlook takes a while to get to is that you have to follow a long gravel road up the mountain to the overlook. The view is definitely worth the trip though! And if you're worried about your car managing the gravel road, you're welcome to park your car at the base of the mountain and carpool in my SUV.

In the summertime, you might even get lucky enough to see a cloud inversion during your mountain engagement photo session. This weather phenomenon is pretty rare, and we're lucky to get it here in Chattanooga. During an inversion, the clouds and fog all fall into the valley, right above the river. The result is the otherworldly feeling of standing above the clouds. Ana and Paolo caught a cloud inversion during their sunrise elopement, and the images are stunning.

If you want to catch a cloud inversion during your engagement session, let me know! I've gotten pretty good at predicting when the weather will be just right.

Just a couple of notes: I only shoot here at sunrise. The angle of the light is perfect first thing in the morning, but it's not great for the rest of the day. But if you're down for a crack-of-dawn engagement photo session, this is the spot for you.

You'll also need a permit to have your engagement photos here. The permit is free, but we'll need to file for a permit about a month out. If you want your shoot here, let's plan it well in advance!

Point Park

Though it got its start as a Civil War battlefield, Point Park on Lookout Mountain is now a beautiful hiking destination. From the overlook, you get a view of Chattanooga and Moccasin Bend, the huge bend in the Tennessee River right outside the city. If you want a view of the city and mountain vibes, this is a great spot.

The backdrop here isn't as hilly as the other engagement photo locations on this list, but the flat landscape makes the sky look huge. The blue river, lush forests, and dappled city make for a super dynamic, colorful background - without taking the focus away from you and your partner.

Unlike some of the mountain spots, Point Park is super accessible. All the paths are paved, and there's tons of parking available.

Quick note: Point Park charges $10 per adult to get in – I'd say it's definitely worth the fee!

First Look Pros and Cons

"Should we do a first look?" I get this question a lot, and while I'll always support what you and your partner want, my answer is always, "YES!" Still, you have to do what's best for your wedding, so I've put together a list of pros and cons for having a first look.

Whether or not you choose to do a first look, the first time you see your partner on your wedding day will be magical, and I'll make sure to capture the moment!

What Is a First Look?

Traditionally, couples wait to see each other until the ceremony portion of a wedding day. A first look is a small break from tradition in exchange for a chance for the couple to see each other before the ceremony. Typically, one person approaches the other from behind and touches their partner or says their name to let them know if time to turn around. Then they turn and get to see their partner in all their wedding day glory – cue the waterworks!

Of course, you can always put your own spin on it. I've seen couples stand back-to-back and turn around at the same time. Others have walked across open fields or bridges to see each other. And some keep it super casual and meet for a drink before the ceremony! There's no wrong way to do a first look, so we'll talk and create a plan that fits into your timeline and with your venue.

First Look Pros and Cons

Why I Love First Looks

It saves time.

By doing a first look, you eliminate the need for photos between the ceremony and reception. After your first look, you can take couple's portraits, bridal party photos, and even family photos. You can go straight from your ceremony to the reception without making your guests wait around.

It's super intimate.

Most of the time, the only people present for the first look are you, your partner, and your photographer. You get a few minutes alone to see your person and really react - tears, giggles, hugs, the whole nine. After the initial moment, you can spend time talking, taking photos together, and just enjoying each other's presence (something you don't get when you meet at the altar). If you're at all nervous about being able to react fully and enjoy the moment in front of a crowd, a first look is the way to go.

It helps shake off the jitters.

Spending an entire day away from your person (especially such a big day) can be stressful. Why not cut your time apart a little shorter? With a first look, you'll be able to relax before the ceremony and shake off your jitters together.

It prevents accidental run-ins.

Look, keeping the couple away from each other on the day of their wedding isn't easy. If they're both getting ready in the same venue, the chances of an accidental run-in are high. With a first look, you don't have to worry about getting everyone to the ceremony site without seeing each other. You can get ready, have your first look, and head to the ceremony together. It'll save you (and your coordinator) a lot of stress.

Why Some People Don't Do First Looks

"It's not traditional."

The most common reason couples don't do a first look is that it goes against tradition. While it seems romantic, the origin of the tradition is a bit strange.

The tradition of seeing the bride walk down the aisle comes from a time of arranged marriages. Back then, the bride and groom weren't even allowed to meet before their wedding day for fear that the groom would decide his bride wasn't attractive enough (ouch!) and would call off the wedding. This is where the wedding veil comes from, too; the groom didn't get to see the bride's face until the very last moment. Oof!

If you want that traditional feeling when you walk down the aisle, go for it! Just don't be afraid to break tradition if a first look feels right to you.

"It takes the wow factor out of walking down the aisle."

I hear this all the time, and while I totally understand the concern, it couldn't be further from the truth. While there may not be much of a surprise factor in this moment if you've already seen your partner, I promise the wow is still there.

My couples who opt for a first look still get emotional during their ceremonies. They laugh, smile, cry - everything you'd expect from a wedding ceremony. Even after your first look, the wedding ceremony is still the biggest moment of the day. Trust me: it'll be emotional no matter what!

"We'll regret it."

I wouldn't be so sure! Check out what one of my wedding clients had to say about her first look:

"We did a first look and I am so so thankful we did. It meant we were able to get most of the bridal party pictures done before the ceremony so we only had a few together and a few with family after the ceremony. It meant we were able to relax and go to our reception faster. If you have any sort of anxiety, social or otherwise, being able to see each other and even just get some good hugs in for the last few hours before people arrive is so calming. We actually were officially married the day before our wedding, so it wasn’t about nerves for that, just for having so many people around and watching. You also get time with the full bridal party and select family to hang out before anyone else shows up, and can check things to make sure they’re being set up in a way that you like. I recommend a first look anytime I talk to someone about their wedding!"

Unknown

At the end of the day, it's up to you!

The decision of whether or not to do a first look is entirely up to you and your partner. Stick with tradition, do a first look, or throw it all out the window and get ready together. Either way, the first time you see each other in your wedding attire will be magical.

Not sure which way to go? I'd love to talk you through it! I can help you both decide whether a first look is right for you and find the perfect location at your venue. Visit my contact page, shoot me a message, and let's chat!

Engagement Photo Poses 101: Look Great & Feel Natural

So many couples put off their engagement sessions because they're nervous about posing. How will we stand? Should we kiss? What do I do with my hands?! The nerves are completely normal, but there's no need to worry about engagement photo poses. That's what your photographer is for!

Most of the time, your photographer should instruct you in how to pose for your engagement photos. Personally, I like to give my couples prompts that guide them into poses naturally. We play games, try new dance moves, and keep things moving so you're never stuck wondering where to stand or how to hold your partner.

Still, I understand that posing for photos (especially cuddly, handsy photos) can feel awkward! That's why I've compiled these helpful tips I've learned over my years of photographing couples. They'll help you feel less awkward and get super flattering shots with your fiance.

Tips for Flattering Engagement Photo Poses

Laugh forward.

When you start laughing, the natural reaction is to draw your chin back into your neck. Instead, push your chin forward and lengthen your neck. You can even lean forward a little bit. This will eliminate any unflattering double-chin moments and accentuate your jawline.

Two couples laugh and embrace as they pose for engagement photos.

Stand at an angle.

Even the most curvaceous person can look boxy straight-on. Turn your body slightly away from the camera to show off more of your figure and create a more dynamic shape.

A black and white photo of a woman holding her fiance's face and looking up into his eyes. A woman hugs her fiance from behind in a field of wildflowers while they stand for an engagement photo pose. Two photos of couples embracing at the edge of wooden docks.

Arch your back.

Want to really show off your ass...ets? Check out any Victoria's Secret model's booty pics on Instagram and you'll notice how they arch their back. This gives you more curves above and below the belt. The experts know what they're doing!

A couple crosses the Walking Bridge in Chattanooga, TN, hand-in-hand. The woman looks back over her should and smiles at the camera. A couple embrace at the end of a dock.

Cross your knees.

If you're wearing a more fitted dress or skirt (like a mermaid cut, sheath, or body-con), crossing your legs (almost like you have to pee) accentuates your hips and creates a focal line that flows with the shape of the dress.

A couple lounges on a floral blanket in the grass while they sit in an engagement photo pose. A couple lounges on a red leather sofa.

Get playful.

Photoshoots can feel foreign at first, but you can absolutely pose for your engagement photos without being stiff or formal. The best way to look natural on camera is to have fun! Get flirty, play around, make your partner laugh. The more fun you're having, the more dynamic and candid your photos will be.

A man and woman pose for engagement photos by dancing together in a field at sunset. A close-up shot of a man and woman hugging their black and tan dog. You can see the woman's engagement ring. An engaged couple poses for photos in a river. The woman kicks water at towards the camera. Both of them laugh. An overhead shot of a man and woman dangling their feet off a dock above a lake.

Most importantly, talk to you photographer!

If your photographer asks you to pose in a way that feels unnatural or uncomfortable, tell them! You want your photos to look like you, so be yourselves and don't be afraid to speak up if something isn't right.

5 Unique Unity Ceremony Ideas

Looking for a way to give your wedding ceremony a personal touch? Try one of these unique unity ceremony ideas!

Traditionally, this is the part of the wedding ceremony in which the couple perform a ceremony symbolizing their unity and the tying together of two families. It's sometimes based in religion, but not always! Throughout my time as a wedding photographer, I've capture tons of unique unity ceremonies, both religious and not.

Here are a few of my favorite unique wedding ceremony ideas I've come across. Use them as inspiration for your own ceremony!

My Favorite Unique Unity Ceremony Ideas

1. Plant a tree.

For a unity ceremony with a natural touch, plant a tree! During this unity ceremony, the couple work together to plant a sapling (or another kind of plant) in a pot and surround it with soil. When you're done, you can say 'I do' before your tree, and if you have a green thumb, you can enjoy your tree for years to come! Plant it in your yard, watch it grow, and who knows? Maybe your grandchildren will get to play underneath it one day.

2. Light a unity candle.

The unity candle has been around for a while, but that doesn't mean you can't put your own unique spin on it! One of my couples used a blue candle they'd inherited from the groom's grandparents, who only lit the candle once a year on their anniversary. The bride and groom lit this unity candle for their wedding ceremony, and they plan to keep the tradition alive on their own anniversary.

If you don't have a family heirloom, use your unity candle to start a new tradition! You can commission a custom unity candle from a small business or go with one from your favorite local shop. Don't be afraid to take a long-standing wedding tradition and make it your own!

3. Tie knots.

This unity ceremony idea takes the collaboration of the unity candle and turns it into a unique piece of art you can keep forever. In this ceremony, the couple braids ropes or ties a knot together, symbolizing the coming together of two people and two families to create a strong bond.

This unity ceremony actually stems from a Bible verse, Ecclesiastes 4:12, "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." But I've seen non-religious couples put their own spin on it! If you're a couple of adventure seekers, tie a knot with rock climbing rope. If you enjoy boating, tie a sailing knot. No matter how you do it, physically 'tying the knot' is a beautiful representation of the bond you've created in your marriage.

4. Have a ring warming ceremony.

This unity ceremony is a great way to get your loved ones involved in the ceremony. The officiant introduces the ring warming ceremony, and then the couple's wedding bands are passed through the crowd (either tied together, in a mesh bag, or in a box). Everyone in attendance gets a moment to silently 'bless' the rings in their own way. They might say a prayer, think encouraging thoughts, or just send good vibes. Then, when everyone's had their turn, the couple exchanges their rings, now warmed by the love of their family and friends.

A word of warning, though: at a large wedding, the ring warming ceremony can take a long time. Be sure you have music queued up for this part of the ceremony!

5. Take a shot together!

Want to keep things fun at your wedding? Take a shot with your partner! Pick your favorite liquor, pour each other a shot (or offer shots to all your guests), and knock one back! It doesn't get any more fun than that!

Thank you so much for reading about my favorite unique ceremony ideas! I hope you found something that will work for your own ceremony.

There are a million ways to make your wedding ceremony your own. If you're looking for ideas, check out my blog for past weddings I've had the honor to shoot. LAST-MINUTE COVID MICROWEDDING IN CHATTANOOGA | MORGAN + JACOB

By now, we’re familiar with COVID weddings. We all know someone who’s been forced to scale down, elope, or reschedule due to the pandemic. While it’s stressful (and definitely not ideal), there are tons of resources out there for eloping or hosting a safe COVID microwedding. Yes, it can be done!

But what about those couples who got married at the beginning of the pandemic? Morgan and Jacob’s wedding date was set for just days before the shutdown hit Chattanooga, and without any resources or guidance, they were truly up a creek.

Cue their super resourceful, happy-to-help wedding photographer slash impromptu coordinator (*wink wink*). As I was one of the few vendors scheduled to be there for their wedding day, Morgan and Jacob called upon my industry expertise to help them make their wedding happen. And I’m so glad they did! I got to ease their worries, pull some strings, and help organize a pared-down - but perfect - day for them.

Read on to hear how I helped this couple throw a fun and totally stunning COVID microwedding in their friend’s backyard!

PLANNING A LAST-MINUTE MICROWEDDING

Morgan and Jacob’s wedding was planned for a Saturday in March 2020. Chattanooga shut down the Tuesday before.

As you can imagine, pulling this wedding together in such short notice was a bit tricky.

To add a little more chaos to the planning process, I wasn't in Tennessee! I was in Los Angeles attending a photography conference at the time. So not only were my clients scrambling to pull off a last-minute, COVID-safe microwedding, but their photographer was also on the other side of the country wondering if I would make it home with LA shutting down. It was the perfect storm.

Luckily, Morgan and Jacob were incredibly realistic about their sudden limitations. They were determined to get married on their original date. Still, they accepted that they’d have to scale down their wedding to a safer, more manageable size.

After tons of phone calls, probably a few tears, and plenty of support from their family and friends, Morgan and Jacob were able to pull off this beautiful, intimate microwedding in their friend’s backyard.

TURNING A BACKYARD INTO A WEDDING VENUE

Morgan and Jacob had originally planned a large ceremony at Patten Chapel at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. But when Chattanooga rolled out their COVID regulations, they moved the ceremony to their own church. Just a day later, that church had to cancel all events too, so Morgan and Jacob enlisted the help of their suddenly small guest list - and me, their photographer turned elopement coordinator - to turn their friend’s backyard into a wedding venue.

As soon as I arrived at the ‘venue,’ I got to work arranging the backyard with the help of the bridal party. Place the arbor here. Move those florals. The trampoline in the background? Gotta go! I love being part of my couples’ wedding planning process, but this was a whole new level of involvement for me. Morgan and Jacob really trusted my expertise and industry experience, so I did what I had to do to make their day as perfect as possible.

All the while, I was also shooting Morgan’s getting ready photos in the pool house. Morgan got ready with a few of her girls and her mother in the pool house. Then, the bridesmaids gathered around her to pray before she shared her first look with Jacob.

I picked out a spot under a gorgeous dogwood tree for Morgan and Jacob’s first look. Jacob saw his bride for the first time beneath white blossoms with the sun streaming down onto them both. Their first look was SO tender and sweet. You could just tell that all the craziness and stress of the past week had washed away, leaving only love between them.

Morgan and Jacob shared their private moment, and then they joined the bridal party for some group photos.

INTIMATE MICROWEDDING CEREMONY

In the cutest microwedding fashion, we placed a hexagon arch rented from Copper Quail on the back patio with a backyard full of flowers and greenery behind it. Morgan and her father walked down an aisle lined with roses and eucalyptus. They met Jacob under a hand-crafted, geometric arbor. Their priest married them while their nearest and dearest friends and family looked on.

Although their ceremony didn’t look like they had originally intended, it was still such a loving affair and beautiful in every way. You just can’t ask for more from a last-minute wedding.

THEIR SCALED-DOWN RECEPTION

With such a small guest list, Morgan and Jacob opted for a toned-down outdoor reception. They ordered individually-wrapped meals and kept their guests as safe as possible. After the cake cutting, they divvied up slices onto pieces of dainty family china. While everyone was eating, I whisked the couple away for a few more private photos.

With the stress of the day behind them, Morgan and Jacob finally got to laugh, share a corona (pun intended), and relax knowing they’d officially tied the knot.

MICROWEDDING TODAY, FULL WEDDING LATER ON

I’m so impressed with how well Morgan and Jacob were able to pull off their wedding day. Being that their date was at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, they didn’t have any of the resources couples have now. The term “microwedding” was still really new. Couples across the US were scrambling to throw their weddings together at the last minute. It was intense, but I’m glad I got to help Morgan and Jacob bring their wedding to life.

These two decided to have their legal ceremony on their original date, but they still want to throw a party, so they’ll be hosting a second, larger wedding once the pandemic has died down. This is a great option for couples who just can’t wait to get married but also don’t want to risk a huge wedding right now. You can still have a perfectly romantic microwedding with a few family members and friends, and then you can throw your rager once it’s safe to party again. Several of my couples have gone this route, and I totally support it!

Until things are safe again, I’ll be looking forward to shooting Morgan and Jacob’s second wedding and reminiscing on this sweet day.

I’m always here for my couples, whether that means showing up day-of to take photos or guiding them through the wedding planning process. At the end of the day, we’re a team. I want their wedding to be beautiful and completely them, even when things don’t go according to plan.

Whether you’re throwing together a last-minute microwedding or planning your big bash next year, I want to be part of the process! Get in touch, and let’s make some unforgettable memories together.

For more microwedding inspiration, check out my past sessions on my blog and on social media.

8 Mountain Wedding Venues in Chattanooga, TN

We all love the dreamy mountaintop elopement photos on Pinterest right now. The hazy light streaming through evergreens, the lush forests, the towering rock formations. But not every couple has the urge to hike the backcountry on their wedding day (or the budget to rent a ski resort out west), and many aren’t willing to sacrifice their guest list to have their dream mountain wedding. Why not pick a gorgeous mountain wedding venue here in Chattanooga?

You don’t have to elope in Colorado to get married in the mountains. You can host a wedding of any size and budget here in the Appalachian Mountains.

Why I Love Mountain Weddings

My local couples recognize the lure of the mountains, and many of them fell in love here. No matter the season, the foliage shows up. Go for the dense greens of summer, the copper colors of fall, or even the snowy hills in winter. You can’t go wrong.

Many of these venues also feature river views, a staple here in Chattanooga. Out-of-town guests can really get a feel for the area by driving up into the hills for your wedding and then back into town for drinks at their hotel. Some of these spots even offer their own accommodations! What’s more fun than a weekend in the hills with your closest friends and family, talking under the stars and cozying up in your cabin? (Or a private wedding weekend with your new spouse. Up to you!)

On top of that, there’s something cozy and intimate about a mountain wedding, even one with a large guest list. You can keep things super traditional or play up the vibes with cabin-themed decor. Either way, the hills make the perfect backdrop.

My Favorite Mountain Wedding Venues in Chattanooga

1. Gardens in the Gorge

If you’re looking for a mountain wedding venue that doesn’t sacrifice modern style, check out Gardens in the Gorge. The outdoor ceremony site works well in spring and fall, especially with the thick forest that surrounds the venue. Their main indoor space, Windsor Hall, is great for large receptions, and it can double as a ceremony space if the weather goes south.

Gardens in the Gorge is close to town, and it features four cottages for guests or bridal party members to rent for the weekend. Each of the cottages can accommodate four guests, so you could easily plan for a weekend getaway with your nearest and dearest.

Want to elope? You can do that here, too. Gardens in the Gorge will let you rent their space for just a few hours so you can host a private, intimate wedding away from the city. And like I said, it’s close enough to downtown for dinner or an afterparty.

2. Tennessee RiverPlace

This venue has a different feel from some of the others on this list, but it still offers an impressive mountain view. Located deep in the valley, Tennessee RiverPlace is a Spanish style mansion overlooking the river.

If you’re concerned about the weather, the mansion is plenty large enough to accommodate an indoor ceremony and reception. But if you’re getting married in late spring or early fall, I say take advantage of the outdoor space. You can say your vows right in front of the river and dance all night on the outdoor patio surrounded by mountains.

Again, this venue is just a few minutes from downtown Chattanooga, so your out-of-town guests can Uber there and back without issue (and your friends can party downtown after the reception ends).

The mansion on the river is definitely the show stopper at this venue, but you still get the dreamy mountain vibes.

3. The Gray Dove

This venue is dripping with Tennessee charm. The Gray Dove is a true barn venue nestled on a farm in the valley. As if the farm itself wasn’t beautiful enough, you also get a backdrop of rolling hills in the distance.

When you rent The Gray Dove, you get the farm for the weekend. In addition to the ceremony and reception spaces, your bridal party can stay the night in the 1920’s farmhouse onsite. And did I mention the groom’s suite has an arcade and pool table?

I always recommend this venue to couples who want a barn wedding and a fun weekend away with their friends. My tip: book for late spring or early fall. The barn itself isn’t air conditioned, but it feels amazing on a mild, breezy night.

A bridge and groom stand together under an octagon arbor in a field.A bride and groom walk arm-in-arm down a gravel road through an open field. A groom leans on a railing and smiles at a mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga, TN.

4. Hemlock Falls

While it may not offer all the amenities some of these other venues do, Hemlock Falls is one of my favorite places to shoot. It offers the same vibes as a secluded meadow elopement just a short ways from downtown Chattanooga.

There’s one cabin onsite (which is perfect for your wedding night!), but other than that, Hemlock Falls is a clean slate. If you’re a DIY-savvy bride who wants a mountain wedding on a budget, I highly recommend Hemlock Falls.

5. The Homestead

The Homestead at Cloudland Station is one of my all-time favorite mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga. It’s nestled in the valley with a beautiful view of Lookout Mountain and perfect for couples looking for a boho venue with serious style.

This is technically a barn venue, but it’s more modern than it is rustic. Plus, with both indoor and outdoor spaces, it’s perfect for all seasons and weather. The barn itself is 150 years old and includes a tented reception space outside, so your guests can take a break from dancing to enjoy the night air.

In addition to the ceremony and reception spaces, The Homestead also features onsite accommodations for your bridal party and guests (including a beautiful old house, a lodge, and two treehouses. Seriously.).

This is another venue that’s near enough to Chattanooga for a downtown afterparty. But you might not need one! The grounds are gorgeous, and the different on-site options make it a perfect all-in-one venue. You get the charm of the barn, the grandeur of the mountain landscape, and the modern look all in one. What’s not to love?

6. Grandview

You can’t get any closer to a mountaintop wedding than you can at Grandview. The venue is literally on Lookout Mountain. The courtyard provides a lush, green backdrop for spring and summer weddings, and the patio is perfect for an open-air reception.

My favorite thing about this venue is that it includes access to Rock City, one of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in Chattanooga. I love taking couples and their bridal parties to the suspension bridge for photos. And the natural rock formations make for stunning photos, especially at sunset. Think “Utah backcountry elopement” just a few miles from downtown Chattanooga. If a mountaintop wedding is your goal, you really can’t go wrong with Grandview.

A bridal party celebrates as the bride and groom kiss on a suspension bridge. An outdoor dining space at twilight, lit by twinkle lights and candles.

7. The Views at Sunset Ridge

While this venue isn’t technically in Chattanooga, it’s close enough that I had to include it. The Views at Sunset Ridge combines a modern, clean lodge look with unforgettable mountain views. Trust me, it’s worth the 30-minute drive.

The venue itself sits on a hill with 360 views of the surrounding mountains, which are highlighted by the dining hall’s picture frame windows. In contrast, the ceremony space is super cozy with its modern lodge vibes. When you walk out after the ceremony, you’re hit with the huge Tennessee sky.

I usually recommend The Views for winter weddings since the building is so beautiful, but it would really work well for any season. Whether you’re escaping the heat of summer or want to keep your guests warm in winter, this is the place to do it.

A groom dips his bride into a kiss in front of the Tennessee hills. A wide shot of an empty wedding ceremony space. The altar is at the base of wood stairs beneath a large cross. A bride poses with her bridesmaids, who are dressed in emerald green, in front of the hills at a mountain wedding venue in Chattanooga, TN.

8. The Venue

This is one of the most popular mountain wedding venues in Chattanooga for good reason. It’s near downtown, easy to get to, and has plenty of space indoors and out.

The Venue is great for couples who want a beautiful space they can make their own. Yes, The Venue has plenty of its own charm, but it’s also a bit of a blank canvas. You can really inject your own style into the place and get the mountain views you’re looking for. Win-win.

And my favorite part: there are tons of nearby spots I can whisk the couple off to for more photos. So you can get your ceremony photos in front of the freestanding stone fireplace, your couples’ portraits in the Tennessee hills, and then let loose on the dance floor under the stars.

Thank you so much for reading about my favorite mountain wedding venues in Chattanooga! I hope you found a spot that checks all the boxes for you.

I love all these venues, and they all have one thing in common: they highlight the natural beauty of the Tennessee mountains. I love shooting interesting venues, but I also love when a ceremony fits perfectly into the landscape. When you get married in a place like that, it feels so natural and real in a way that truly comes to life in your photos.

CHATTANOOGA DESTINATION ELOPEMENT IN THE CLOUDS | ANA + PAULO

Elopements have grown in popularity (and honestly, in style) in the past few years, and COVID has only made them more common. I’ve spoken to so many couples chasing the mountaintop elopement feeling. I tell them all the same thing: elope to Chattanooga! Just a two-hour drive from both Atlanta and Nashville, Chattanooga is the perfect elopement destination for couples looking to run away without straying too far from home.

Enjoy this sunrise Chattanooga elopement session with Ana and Paolo. If you’re planning your own elopement and looking for the right destination, let’s chat! I’ve got a few secret spots in mind.

CHATTANOOGA ELOPEMENT DESTINATION

After cancelling their wedding due to COVID, Ana and Paolo got married in a courthouse in Atlanta. They had been legally married for a little while before their Chattanooga destination elopement, but they still wanted to elope! Plus, they wanted an excuse to wear their wedding attire and create beautiful photos to look back on. Ana found me on Instagram, and after a call and some coordinating, she and Paolo hopped in their car around 2 a.m. to reach Chattanooga before sunrise.

Couples often overlook Chattanooga as an elopement destination, but the views and photo opportunities can't be beat, especially in this part of the country. This spot on Signal Mountain is one of my favorite elopement locations. You get a stunning view of the Tennessee River winding through the mountains, and the entire mountainside is bathed in golden light at sunrise. You can’t go wrong anywhere in Chattanooga when it comes to mountain views, but this state park location is such a gem.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Ana found me on Instagram, and she reached out with tons of questions. First, she specifically wanted to elope at this location near Chattanooga. She’d seen it featured on my Instagram, and she’d fallen in love with the mountains before we ever picked up the phone. Of course, I was down!

Ana wanted to make sure the photographer she entrusted with her Chattanooga elopement fit both her style and her expectations for skill level. Being a professional model, Ana works closely with photographers almost daily. (And I’m not just saying that because she’s gorgeous. She’s actually a professional model.) She knows just about as much about photography as any non-photographer could. Understandably, she had a specific vision for the shoot and very high expectations. Bring it on!

As an interracial couple, it was important to Ana and Paolo that their photographer know how to shoot their contrasting skin tones. If you’re not familiar with photography, this might seem like a simple requirement. Actually, shooting and editing contrasting skin tones is actually pretty difficult, especially for beginners.

Ana and I discussed what she wanted, and I shared samples of my past shoots. After our call, we decided we’d make a great team. She and Paolo packed up their wedding clothes and made their way to Chattanooga.

FIRST LOOK IN THE MOUNTAINS

Though they got legally married ahead of time, Ana and Paolo didn't wear their real wedding attire to the courthouse. The first look played a major role in this elopement session. They timed the drive from Atlanta perfectly, and they made it to the mountain just in time to get dressed and share their first look as the sun rose. It was magical.

Paolo wore a simple navy suit and bowtie, which perfectly contrasted Ana’s long, beaded gown. The sun glinting off the beading really brought the gown to life, and it made Ana look even more radiant.

CHATTANOOGA ELOPEMENT ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Ana knew she wanted to elope to Chattanooga, but not just for the mountains. She fell in love with the view above the clouds!

During the summer in Chattanooga, we sometimes get to witness a very particular, kind of rare weather phenomenon called cloud inversion. During cloud inversion, a layer of clouds sinks down from the mountaintops and onto the Tennessee River, settling in the gorge like a blanket. The result is this otherworldly, ethereal view above the clouds.

This happens in the summer and only at sunrise, so Ana and Paolo trusted me to find the perfect vantage point and day for their photoshoot. Especially with elopements, being your photographer often means more than just showing up day-of, taking your photos, and leaving. I often act as a guide for my couples. I get to coach them through the wedding planning process and set them up for unforgettable moments like these. It’s truly an honor to guide my couples into their dream wedding photos.

You deserve wedding photos that totally capture you and your partner (whether or not you’re a model!). I’d love to work with you to plan and capture a day that feels like you.

If you’ve got your heart set on a dreamy elopement in Chattanooga, please reach out! I’m here to guide you in the right direction and help you pick the perfect, secluded spot to exchange your vows.

CHATTANOOGA ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS WITH A MOODY TWIST | LAINE + BRAD

Sometimes, a bride comes to me with an idea and I say, “I’m all in!” Laine knew exactly what she wanted in her Chattanooga engagement photo session, and I was happy to bring her ideas to life in this edgy yet intimate shoot.

Originally, Laine and Brad just booked me for an engagement session. But after I delivered their engagement photos, they asked me to shoot their wedding! (Score!) I’m in love with these images and so excited to join them for their wedding at Tennessee RiverPlace

Enjoy Laine and Brad’s Chattanooga engagement photos, and reach out if you’re looking for an engagement photographer in the area!

Chattanooga Engagement Photographer - Photos Close to Home

Laine and Brad met at a mutual friend’s bonfire. Before the party, Laine’s friend told her she had to meet a guy there named Brad. Poor Brad was out of the loop, but he was immediately drawn to Laine when he saw her at the bonfire. And I mean, can you blame him? He followed her around all night, and the two of them hit it off. They started dating right away, and the rest is history!

For their engagement session, Laine and Brad wanted to recreate their first date close to home. They picked a beautiful open field near their house for some hazy sunrise photos and planned a campfire in the backyard with their pups to wrap up the shoot. Laine had a vision, and she let me run with it. The result is this collection of moody, romantic sunrise engagement photos.

Sunrise Engagement Photos

I met Laine and Brad at sunrise in a field near their home. The light fog and early morning rays created a dark fairytale forest setting that was just perfect for these two. She wore a long emerald dress (which contrasted her gold engagement ring and hoop earrings beautifully), and he wore a charcoal button-down with a tiny pattern detail on the pocket. Not too formal, not too casual. (If you’re unsure of what to wear for your own engagement photos, I’ve got you covered.)

If you follow me on social media, you might notice my work varies a lot depending on the time of day and lighting situations. I love to keep my editing as close to how the day actually looked as possible, so when Laine told me her vision, we worked together to decide on a time and location that would fit the vibe she was envisioning. She came to me with a clear idea of what she wanted in location, attire, and overall feel. She even took charge during the photoshoot! When a bride says, “I’m going to do this pose,” I say, “Go for it!”

I’m always more than happy to take full creative control of a shoot, but it’s also fun to work with a couple who knows exactly what they want. Laine and Brad worked for these shots, even going so far as to scout the locations themselves. They explained to me what they expected in the final images, but they also told me to get creative with it. I played around with long exposures and a few creative focus images, and they walked away with a wide variety of shots that Laine said perfectly fit what they had dreamed up for their shoot.

Getting Creative With Smoke Bombs

Though we had planned for a foggy sunrise shoot, the weather didn't exactly cooperate. Any  fog we were hoping for cleared as soon as the sun rose. Luckily, I had a few smoke bombs in the back of my car, so we made our own fog!

The faux “fog” didn’t look entirely natural, but the yellowish hue and billowing clouds of smoke added to the dark, otherworldly feeling we had going on. Plus, they added even more edginess to Laine and Brad’s looks. I especially love how the smoke photographed in black and white, and so did they!

We can’t always count on the weather to cooperate for an engagement shoot (or a wedding, for that matter), but I’ll help you make gorgeous memories rain or shine or fog or… you get the idea. I’m all about rolling with the punches!

Backyard Bonfire

To wrap up this engagement session, we swapped the dark and moody vibes for some fireside snuggles in Laine and Brad’s backyard. After spending the morning with this couple, I could just tell they were made for each other. They worked as a team, and their chemistry made every pose look natural.

Another gorgeous detail from the day is the array of blankets Laine and Brad styled for their shoot. Brad’s mother made all of them by hand! Laine and Brad spread them like picnic blankets on the ground and cozied up with them by the fire. I loved the pop of color and the texture they added to these images. And what a sweet surprise for Brad’s mom to see her artwork on display!

Every detail of Laine and Brad’s engagement shoot was personal to them - from the locations all the way down to the props. The backyard bonfire was a nod to the day they met. I love the idea of paying homage to your first date (or your most memorable date) in your engagement photos. Did you go bowling? Let’s shoot in a bowling alley! Did you meet at a dog park? Let’s include your furry friends! These small details are a sneaky, fun way to pay tribute to your love story.

Speaking of furry friends, I’m so glad Laine and Brad’s dogs got to join us for a few photos. After watching from the window for a little while, they rushed outside and snuggled up with mom and dad by the fire - a super sweet ending to a perfect engagement session.

It’s not every day I get to work with a couple who has such a clear artistic vision, but it’s such a treat when I do! Whether you already have an idea for your engagement photos or you have no clue where to start, I’d love to hop in on the creative process.

Reach out so we can chat about your dream engagement session. I’d be honored to be your engagement photographer here in Chattanooga or wherever your story takes you.
